How to Make Nuclear Waste Disposal Safe

Certified Consultants | Posted on March 14th, 2013 by

About 13% of the world’s power is nuclear. During the 1990′s, this figure was almost 18%. This trend may continue to decline or undergo a renaissance, but in the meantime nuclear waste disposal remains a hot topic among engineers and governmental agencies. Safe procedures for the disposal of nuclear waste have been in place for decades, and continued improvement of these techniques remain in discussion today.

Lightning-Proof Wind Turbines

Certified Consultants | Posted on December 4th, 2012 by

Here’s a story we’ve all heard before: due to the inefficient nature and inevitable decline of fossil fuels, alternative energy resources are becoming increasingly popular. Wind energy is a popular source of alternative energy, with wind farms sprouting up all over the world. Here’s something you may not have thought about: lightning strikes are a major problem for these wind turbines. Intuitively, places with high wind speeds also have stormy weather, and a 150 meter tall metal pole makes an attractive target for lightning strikes. In fact, some extreme wind turbine sites experience 10 lightning strikes a day!

BE CAE & Test Does a Lot of Simulating

Certified Consultants | Posted on November 19th, 2012 by

It was a pleasure meeting one of COMSOL’s Certified Consultants at the Milan Conference last month. Similarly to a number of consultants, and as evident from their name, BE CAE & Test offers both the ability to simulate processes and designs as well as test them. From the island of Sicily, Giuseppe Petrone and Marco Scionti have been working with COMSOL for almost three years now, and have performed a number of projects for customers based on COMSOL Multiphysics. From what I could see from the great booth at the conference, BE CAE & Test does a lot of simulating.

Fatigue — When Cyclic Stress Produces Fractures

Certified Consultants | Posted on September 26th, 2012 by

Many of the products that engineers design experience cyclic stresses during use that are below the material’s yield stress; unfortunately, these stresses can still be the primary reason for failure. Thus, engineers and designers must find ways of including the effects of cyclic stresses when designing products for long-term use.
