In my experience, COMSOL MP is a product that makes significant advances year after year. I find that the annual conference is a very efficient way to learn about the changes, and to try them out while the COMSOL developers are on hand to coach. The 1-month trial CD that is made available to attendees is a great way to continue doing exercises and trying out new features even after the conference ends. Version 4, by the way, is a masterpiece! It was a special treat this year to explore its fresh, new interface and insightful approach to the overall management of data.

So many other software packages have annual or semiannual updates, without there really being much improvement. The COMSOL staff should be commended for working hard in significantly improving the software every year. I have used the software for about 5 years, and experienced the significant improvements every year, from additional modeling capability to vastly improved computation in the area of fluid flow. This year the improvements are phenomenal with release of Version 4.0 ... a much improved gui, as well as significant new capability, such as geometry parameterization.
