Introduction
This is an introduction to acoustics and vibration phenomena in the COMSOL Multiphysics environment including structural-acoustics couplings and piezoelectricity. We will demonstrate simulations of both elastic and fluid waves: how a vibrating structure induces pressure waves in a surrounding fluid and also demonstrate how the surrounding fluid acts as an impedance load on the vibrating structure and how it changes its frequency characteristics. Modal, frequency-response, and transient simulations are covered. The add-on Modules used in this course are: the Acoustics Module, the Structural Mechanics Module, and the MEMS Module
The course contents include:
- Sound propagation through mufflers and similar devices
- Acoustic waves generated by elastic vibrations
- Piezo-acoustic devices
- Vibration analysis of mechanical components
- Elasto-acoustics and non-destructive testing (NDT)
- Perfectly Matched Layers (PMLs) for optimal modeling of infinite domains
Suggested Background
This course assumes some familiarity with the basic concepts of acoustics and structural dynamics. We strongly recommend that those new to COMSOL Multiphysics take the COMSOL Multiphysics Intensive Training course prior to attending this class.
