Introduction
This course provides an intensive introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics. We start at an introductory level, leading students through topics needed in all analyses (geometry creation, interactive meshing techniques, model setup, post-processing, etc.) and then into advanced topics especially with regards to solution techniques and multiphysics modeling. A combination of guided hands-on, theoretical and practical lecture, and self-guided hands-on is used. The goal is to immerse the student in all of the main aspects of using COMSOL so that they can feel comfortable with the software and confident that they are correctly solving their simulation problems with COMSOL.
Day 1, 9:00am - 5:00pm
The course begins with a guided introduction to the Graphical User Interface of the software so that the student learns the key steps in the modeling workflow. In particular the following will be considered:
- The COMSOL Multiphysics graphical user interface -- all the steps from creating a geometry to model setup, meshing, solving, and postprocessing.
- Using and understanding the key features of the COMSOL Multiphysics architecture.
- Geometry import and geometry creation.
- Best practices for meshing geometry.
- Mesh and geometry simplification for analysis.
- Understanding the theory behind the linear and non-linear finite element method.
Day 2, 9:00am - 5:00pm
The second day builds upon the previous day with more examples, and lecture that address:
- Practical and theoretical aspects of multiphysics modeling and efficient solution techniques
- The math behind multiphysics finite element methods
- Considerations for coupling different physics together
- Adding equations and couplings to the problems
- Modeling time-dependent, frequency domain, and eigenvalue problems
- Usage of moving and adaptive meshes
- Finding, understanding, and eliminating errors in the model
- Efficient modeling for maximizing user productivity
According to the length of the course and the interests of the participants, some or all of the above will be considered.
