COMSOL Multiphysics Intensive Training (2 Days)

Date & Location

City: Zoetermeer
Date: December 8 - 9, 2014
Location: COMSOL BV
Röntgenlaan 37
2719 DX Zoetermeer

This two-day course is an intensive introduction to the workflow and key features of COMSOL Multiphysics. We start at introductory level and gradually move into more advanced topics using lectures and worked examples. The goal is to quickly immerse the student in all relevant steps for building extended multiphysics models so that he or she can feel comfortable with most of the commands accessible from the user interface and confident that they can be productive solving simulation problems with COMSOL.

Day 1, 09:00-17:00

The first day of the course treats the basics of multiphysics modeling. It starts with a comprehensive insight in the Graphical User Interface (GUI) and continues into single physics modeling while treating basic concepts of geometry, meshing and results viewing. In particular we will focus on…

  • Modeling steps in COMSOL Multiphysics
  • Geometry modeling and meshing
  • Specifying physics conditions
  • Multiphysics couplings
  • Analysis types and solver choices
  • Algebraic expressions and post-processing options

Day 2, 09:00-17:00

The second day continues on (multi)physics modeling and gradually migrates into solver options such as incremental steps (ramping), convergence handling and time dependency. More information on meshing and geometry in relation to solver schemes is shared and extended multiphysics topics are treated in the context of modeling tricks. In particular we will consider...

  • Solvers options
  • Geometry modeling and meshing (cont.)
  • Model size handling
  • Materials and functions
  • Standard and advanced post-processing options
  • Using external functions in the material parameters
  • Non-local coupling variables (extended multiphysics)

According to the length of the course and the interests of the participants, some or all of the above will be considered.

Kevin van Hoogdalem

Kevin obtained his Master's degree in Applied Physics from Delft University of Technology in 2008. He continued his studies in Basel (CH), where he obtained his PhD in Theoretical Physics in 2012 with a specialization in condensed matter physics. After joining COMSOL, he has expanded his expertise in various areas of applied physics, including acoustics, electromagnetism, and heat transfer.

Tycho van Noorden

He holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics, and has developed his expertise in many different areas: linear and non-linear solver techniques, engineering applications in oil transport, air purification and groundwater flows, and multiscale modeling such as the global ocean flow and underground CO2 storage. As a former assistant professor, he has extensive experience as both a mathematics and modeling instructor.

Suggested Background

This course is suitable for anyone interested in using COMSOL Multiphysics for the mathematical modeling of physics phenomena such as heat transfer, transport phenomena, fluid dynamics, electromagnetics, photonics, structural mechanics, and acoustics. No previous experience with COMSOL Multiphysics is required.
