We start at an introductory level, then lead the student through topics needed in all analyses (meshing techniques, choosing solvers, etc.) followed by advanced topics (coupling variables, adding and modifying equations) using lecture, worked examples and workshop problems. The goal is to immerse the student in all of the main aspects of using COMSOL so that he or she can feel comfortable with most of the commands accessible from the user interface and confident that they can be productive solving simulation problems with COMSOL.

Day 1, 09:00-17:00

The first day will get you up and running on model building. The focus is on getting acquainted with the Graphical User Interface (GUI) by considering a variety of straightforward demo models and exercises. In particular we will consider...

Day 2, 09:00-17:00

The second day focuses on more complicated models and trouble shooting. In particular we will consider...

  • Solver choices

Day 3, 09:00-17:00

The third day focuses on tips and tricks that help to bring the most out of your models. In particular we will consider...

  • Solver options
  • Model size handling
  • Non-local coupling variables (extended multiphysics)
  • Combined modeling techniques (exercise)

According to the length of the course and the interests of the participants, some or all of the above will be considered.


Tycho van Noorden

He holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics, and has developed his expertise in many different areas: linear and non-linear solver techniques, engineering applications in oil transport, air purification and groundwater flows, and multiscale modeling such as the global ocean flow and underground CO2 storage. As a former assistant professor, he has extensive experience as both a mathematics and modeling instructor.

Suggested Background

This course is suitable for anyone interested in using COMSOL Multiphysics for the mathematical modeling of physics phenomena such as heat transfer, transport phenomena, fluid dynamics, electromagnetics, photonics, structural mechanics, and acoustics. No previous experience with COMSOL Multiphysics is required.

Cancellation Policy

Please note that your seat in the course can not be confirmed until payment or a formal purchase order have been received.

Instructor-led training tuition is fully refundable if we receive written notification (via mail or e-mail) of cancellation on or before seven business days prior to the class. Cancellations made less than seven business days prior to class will be charged 25 percent of the course tuition fee. If you fail to show up to class without written notice, you will be charged the full tuition. You may send a substitute in your place to avoid a fee.

If a training course cannot take place as scheduled due to circumstances beyond COMSOL's control, we will issue a full refund for the amount that you have already paid.
