This one day course will provide an introduction to the Finite Element Method. This course is designed for beginners and will start with an introduction to basic concepts such as differential and difference equations, discretization and numerical solution of equations. The course will then proceed to give a brief introduction to model various physical phenomena, such as structural mechanics, heat transfer and fluid flow using this numerical technique. COMSOL Multiphysics will be used to demonstrate all the concepts taught during this course. There will be ample opportunity for hands-on learning of the concepts taught throughout the day.

Introduction to Finite Elements

  • Differential Equations
  • Initial and Boundary Conditions
  • Discretization of Domain
  • Solution of Equations
  • Result Analysis

  • Structural Mechanics
  • Heat Transfer
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Acoustics

Suggested Background

This course is designed for beginners to provide an introduction to both the Finite Element Method, and to the modeling of physical phenomena. The prerequisites are a course in engineering mathematics, basic numerical techniques, and an interest in understanding the scope of modeling physical phenomena.
