Modeling of Ion Transport and Heterogeneous Equilibria in Cathodic Protection Systems for Concrete

Current passage is used in repair techniques for concrete structures suffering from corrosion, like Cathodic Protection (CP).

A mathematical description of ion transport in concrete due to current passage, including the heterogeneous equilibrium involving solid Ca(OH)2 determining the acidity/alkalinity was developed and implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics.

From the first modeling results a qualitative model of concrete acidification due to Cathodic Protection could be derived.
