Use of COMSOL Multiphysics for Efficient, Automatic Inverse Modeling of PDE-based Systems: Applications to Aquifer Characterization

Inverse Modeling refers to the practice of using measurements to estimate unknown parameters of a system, under conditions in which only a model for the forward problem is given.

Here, we present a framework for the inverse modeling of PDE-based systems using COMSOL Multiphysics and MATLAB. Included in our framework is an automatic adjoint state formulation, allowing for more efficient solution of under-determined inverse problems.
