Virtual MRI Safety Evaluations for Patients with Implanted Medical Devices

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) safety evaluations provide important information to patients and physicians regarding the potential hazards of implanted medical devices in the MRI environment. MED Institute helps medical device manufacturers evaluate their devices for safety in the MRI environment using computational modeling and simulation as well as physical testing for magnetically induced displacement force, magnetically induced torque, MR image artifact, and RF-induced heating. After the simulation and testing are complete, MED interprets the results for MRI safety, labeling and supporting the scientific rationale that is reported in the instructions for use (IFU) of the medical device.

We will give an overview of using the CFD Module for laminar, turbulent, non-Newtonian, and multiphase flows as well as flow in mixers. We will discuss conjugate heat transfer with the combination of heat transfer in solids and heat transfer in fluids, including thermal radiation effects. These phenomena could also be coupled with structural mechanics, chemical reactions, and particle tracing.

Mian Qin
Mian Qin is a technical sales manager who joined COMSOL in 2010. She received her PhD in mechanical engineering and applied mechanics from the University of Pennsylvania, where she specialized in the simulation of microfluidics.
Phil Kinnane
Phil Kinnane is the VP of sales at COMSOL, Inc. He has previously worked within the Business Development, Operations, and Marketing departments. Phil has 20 years of experience with modeling and simulation for all fields of engineering. He earned his PhD in electrochemical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.
Chandan Kumar
Chandan Kumar is an applications engineer specializing in structural mechanics and the analysis and design of microelectromechanical systems. He joined COMSOL in 2009. He earned his PhD from Penn State University, where he studied the dynamics of the self-assembly of semiconductor quantum dots. He is a senior member of IEEE.
Jaymin Patel
Jaymin Patel is an applications engineer at COMSOL. His focus is on products related to CFD, heat transfer, and chemical engineering. He received his master's degree in chemical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Oren Lever
Gas Technology Institute
Oren Lever is a principal engineer at the Gas Technology Institute in Des Plaines, IL. His work includes multiphysics finite element simulations, with a primary focus on the nonlinear elasticplastic structural simulation of pipeline components, material testing for the development of constitutive models.
Marc Reese
Indy Acoustic Research (IAR)
Marc Reese is an acoustic design analyst and cofounder of Indy Acoustic Research (IAR), a four-person consulting group founded in 2015 and located in Indianapolis, Indiana. IAR provides design and testing for embedded acoustic products to more than 50 clients in consumer electronics, medical, and industrial markets. Marc’s technical roles include finite element analysis using the {:comsol} software and lumped element (SPICE) simulation of both microphone and speaker systems, embedded microphone array integration and testing, validation measurements using IAR’s anechoic chamber or Head and Torso Simulator, and mechanical and electrical design of prototypes and fixtures. Prior to IAR, Marc worked for Harman International in a similar capacity and for the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane, IN, supporting piezoelectric sonar. Marc is a 2010 graduate of the Penn State master’s program in acoustics.

David Gross currently manages the MRI safety evaluations group and computational modeling and simulation (CM&S) group at MED Institute, Inc., a medical device consulting company. He graduated from Purdue University with a BS in biomedical engineering and MSE in interdisciplinary engineering. He also holds MS and PhD degrees in biomedical engineering from Ohio State University and is a licensed professional engineer.
