CFD Modeling of Particulate Flow in Open and Closed Spaces

Modeling particulate flow in air is important for the mitigation of airborne pathogen transmission. I will highlight two models we developed at Veryst using COMSOL Multiphysics®. The first involves a closed space: a hospital room, including its ventilation system, and a coughing patient. The second involves two runners in an open space running six feet apart and airborne particles emanating from the mouth of the front runner. We first predicted the airflow using CFD, followed by particle tracing analysis accounting for variations in particle size, drag force, turbulent dispersion, and possibly evaporation.

COMSOL Speakers

Nagi Elabbasi
Veryst Engineering, LLC.
Dr. Nagi Elabbasi is a principal engineer at Veryst Engineering, LLC, and his main area of expertise is modeling multiphysics systems. Dr. Elabbasi has extensive experience in simulating structural mechanics, CFD, heat transfer, acoustics, and coupled systems, including FSI, conjugate heat transfer, and structural-acoustic coupling. Prior to joining Veryst, he worked for nine years in finite element software development. He holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Toronto.
Jeanette Littmarck
Jeanette Littmarck has 25 years of sales experience at COMSOL and is the sales director for government accounts in Washington, D.C.; Maryland; Alabama, Ohio, Florida, Mississippi; and Virginia. She joined COMSOL AB in Sweden in 1992 and became the first sales representative for all Scandinavian customers before moving to the Burlington office in 2000.
Gilbert Kiyingi
Gilbert Kiyingi joined COMSOL in 2015 and currently works as a technical sales engineer, covering accounts in DC, Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware. He received a BS in aerospace engineering from Boston University.
Chandan Kumar
Chandan Kumar is an applications engineer specializing in structural mechanics and the analysis and design of microelectromechanical systems. He joined COMSOL in 2009. He earned his PhD from Penn State University, where he studied the dynamics of the self-assembly of semiconductor quantum dots. He is a senior member of IEEE.
Phil Kinnane
Phil Kinnane is the VP of sales at COMSOL, Inc. He has previously worked within the Business Development, Operations, and Marketing departments. Phil has 20 years of experience with modeling and simulation for all fields of engineering. He earned his PhD in electrochemical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.
Yeswanth Rao
Yeswanth Rao is a senior applications engineer and has been with COMSOL since early 2008. He holds a PhD in biological engineering and a master's degree in electrical engineering. His finite element background is in MEMS, particularly piezoelectric modeling.
Jinlan Huang
Jinlan Huang is an applications engineer for vibrations and acoustics and instructs acoustics and heat transfer training courses. She received her PhD from Boston University, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, investigating acoustic wave propagation in complex-tissue environments and ultrasound-induced tissue heating and bleeding control. She joined COMSOL in 2011.
Bjorn Sjodin
Bjorn Sjodin is the VP of product management at COMSOL. He has been with COMSOL since 1995 and started out as a member of the development team in Stockholm, Sweden. He joined the COMSOL office in Burlington in 2002.
