In this advanced topics training course, we will delve deeper into the practice of finite element modeling using COMSOL Multiphysics® with a focus on equation-based modeling. We will begin with emphasis on understanding the practical aspects of solving linear and nonlinear single-physics and multiphysics problems. We will then focus on understanding the modeling of a physics from the viewpoint of equations that represent the law of conservation and boundary conditions. Having gained familiarity with equation-based modeling, we will discuss advanced modeling techniques such as using extra dimensions, solving feedback problems, and understanding spatial and material frame representations.

This course builds upon the material in the 2-day COMSOL Multiphysics® Intensive course. The Advanced Topics course is designed for existing users of the COMSOL Multiphysics® software, who are comfortable operating the software and want to learn more about the unique and powerful features that can accelerate and improve their modeling and design workflow.

Day 1, 9:00am - 5:00pm

  • Understanding and solving nonlinear problems using the continuation method
  • Solving linear system of equations for single-physics and multiphysics problems
  • Meshing and time stepping considerations for solving time-dependent problems
  • Tuning the solver settings for improved performance

Day 2, 9:00am - 5:00pm

On the second day, we will focus on equation-based modeling techniques that address:

  • Weak form modeling and its implications on the structure of the physics interface boundary conditions and source conditions in the COMSOL® software
  • Using equation-based modeling interfaces in COMSOL Multiphysics® for single-physics and multiphysics problems
  • Theory of boundary conditions and how to implement nonstandard boundary conditions
  • Implementing constraints
  • Extra dimension modeling

Day 3, 9:00am - 5:00pm

On day three, we will focus on equation-based modeling techniques and concepts that address:

  • Using the integral, extrusion, and projection model coupling operators
  • Using the submodeling technique for solving large diffusion-type problems
  • Solving feedback problems
  • Understanding the concept of spatial and material frames and the implications and dependence of certain material properties on material deformation
  • Using the Moving Mesh interface

Suggested Background

The COMSOL Multiphysics® Advanced Topics training course is for existing users who are already familiar with the general usage and workflow of the COMSOL® software. Attendees will be expected to independently build and modify simple models that supplement the course content.
