If you are looking for an intensive introduction to using COMSOL Multiphysics® for modeling fluid flow, this is the course for you. During the 4-day COMSOL Multiphysics® CFD training course, you will develop a strong foundation for your future fluid flow and related multiphysics modeling needs.

The course starts at an introductory level, leading students through the essential steps needed in fluid simulations. You will learn how to simulate creeping, laminar, and turbulent flows; heat transfer and fluid flow in porous media; multiphase flow; high Mach number flow; conjugate heat transfer; and free and forced convection. To teach this course, we use a combination of guided hands-on training, theoretical and practical lecture, and self-guided exercises. The goal is to immerse you in all of the main aspects of using COMSOL Multiphysics® and relevant add-on modules so that you feel comfortable working with the software. By the end of the training session, you will know how to set up a fluid flow model, choose the right boundary conditions, select appropriate mesh settings, and use the results visualization tools.

Day 1

1 p.m.–3 p.m. EDT

The training course begins with a step-by-step guided introduction to fluid flow modeling, so that you learn the key steps in the modeling workflow. After briefly introducing the COMSOL® software and modeling workflow, the course will transition to focusing on fluid flow applications. The following topics will be covered:

  • Overview of the CFD Module
  • Modeling creeping and laminar flows

4–6 p.m. EDT

  • Modeling turbulent flows and selecting the appropriate RANS turbulence models
  • Modeling porous media flows

Day 2

1 p.m.–3 p.m. EDT

The second day builds upon the training from the previous day, with a focus on the modeling of multiphase flows and conjugate heat transfer. Topics will include:

  • Modeling separated multiphase flows
  • Modeling dispersed multiphase flows

4–6 p.m. EDT

  • Modeling natural and forced convection
  • Introduction to modeling particle tracing, high Mach number flows, rarefied flow, and fluid-structure interaction

Day 3

Day 4

1 p.m.–3 p.m. EDT

The fourth day builds upon the training from the previous days, with a focus on the modeling of fluid flow problems involving multiple physics. Topics will include:

  • Modeling conjugate heat transfer coupled to mass transport and chemical reactions

4–6 p.m. EDT

  • Practical and theoretical aspects of multiphysics modeling and efficient solution techniques for CFD modeling
  • Best meshing practices for fluid flow physics
  • Visualization and presentation of results

Some or all of the above topics will be considered according to the length of the course and the interests of the participants.

Suggested Background

This course assumes some familiarity with the basic concepts of fluid flow and heat transfer. The COMSOL Multiphysics® Intensive course is a recommended prerequisite.
