Intensive introduction to computational fluid dynamics using COMSOL Multiphysics®

The CFD modeling course will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the CFD Module, an add-on to the COMSOL Multiphysics® software that provides capabilities for modeling a wide range of flow phenomena. During the 4-day online course, we will introduce you to various physics interfaces and general functionality provided in this module. By the end of the course you will have been introduced to single-phase laminar flow modeling, turbulent flow, compressible flow, conjugate heat transfer, reacting flow, fluid–structure interaction (FSI), multiphase flow, and porous media flow. In addition, we will discuss best practices and useful convergence techniques depending on the specific type of problem at hand.

Training Course Objective

We will use a combination of instructive and self-guided hands-on training together with theoretical and practical lectures. The goal is to immerse you in the COMSOL Multiphysics® modeling workflow and help you feel comfortable working with the CFD Module. By the end of the training course, you will know how to efficiently model fluid flow with the COMSOL® software.

Schedule

Day 1

11 a.m.–1 p.m. EDT

This day will begin with an exercise of putting together a simple single-phase flow model to familiarize ourselves with the user interface (UI) and the COMSOL Multiphysics® modeling workflow. We will provide a brief theoretical overview of the underlying single-phase flow and discuss a few important nondimensional numbers that help us determine the flow regime. Next, each of the dedicated features and boundary conditions in the single-phase flow interfaces will be discussed. The afternoon session will be dedicated to the turbulent flow modeling capabilities of the COMSOL® software.

Day 2

11 a.m.–1 p.m. EDT

The second day builds on the training from the first day. We will first look at modeling compressible flows, where the density is a function of temperature and pressure. This naturally extends to conjugate heat transfer modeling, which includes both natural and forced convection. In the afternoon session, we will first discuss the porous media flow capabilities, focusing on saturated flows, followed by an intro to reacting flow modeling. We will then end the day by considering FSI.

The third day will focus on the methods available in the COMSOL® software for modeling multiphase flow. The two distinct classes of multiphase flow models are separated and dispersed. In separated multiphase flow, the interface between two immiscible fluids is explicitly tracked. In large-scale problems, it becomes impractical to track the interface movement, such as of thousands of bubbles, for example. In these cases, a dispersed multiphase flow model can be used that tracks the volume fraction of the dispersed phase.

This course assumes familiarity with the fundamentals of computational fluid dynamics. We strongly recommend that those new to COMSOL Multiphysics® take the Introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics® training course prior to attending this class.
