Tune into this webinar to learn how to model layered composite structures with the new Composite Materials Module, an add-on to the Structural Mechanics Module and the COMSOL Multiphysics® software as of version 5.4. Composite materials such as fiber-reinforced plastics, laminated plates, and sandwich panels are commonly used to manufacture various structures, including aircraft components and wind turbine blades.

In this presentation, you will learn about the layerwise theory and the equivalent single layer theory, two approaches for accurately modeling composite shells. The webinar will discuss not only standard structural analyses (e.g., stationary, eigenfrequency, transient, and frequency domain) but also micromechanical, first-ply failure, and linear buckling analyses. In addition, you will see how to include different physical phenomena, like heat transfer, acoustics, electromagnetics, and fluid flow, in a composite laminate model. During a live demo, the webinar shows the simulation results for the through-thickness and ply-wise stress distribution in the composite laminate.

Pawan Soami

Pawan Soami is the product manager for the Composite Materials Module and Multibody Dynamics Module. He has been working at COMSOL in the Bangalore office since 2010. He received his master's degree in aerospace engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, where he worked on spectral methods for wave propagation in structures.
