optimization control variable constraint

i give a prescribe displacement on plane A ,and pass some structure(phononic crystal)
,then calculate displacement at plane B
i want to use optimization module to find at what length i can get maximum displacement.
here is my problem ,for some reason,the length must be integer and from 1 to N(1,2,3....N-1,N)
but i dont know how to set the control variable length
