Mesh resolution for pressure acoustics

I am trying to run a frequency domain study for a plate vibrating with normal velocity, I am modelling it as a boundary in pressure acoustics, boundary elements. Currently the mesh is so that there is 4 elements per wavelength but already at 4000Hz this has dramatically increased the run time, how do I decide what is enough elements per wavelength and whether the mesh is giving me accurate results? Why do I need more mesh elements for higher frequencies even when the plate is moving evenly over its surface?
