Voltage Driven 3D Multi-Turn Coil Domain

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

Hello All,

I am currently working with a trial version of COMSOL V4.3 in order to see if it will be useful for my research. I am interested in evaluating the magnetic field effects on optically active materials. I have built a simple 3D inductor model using a Multi-Turn Coil Domain feature based off of the example problems. I have successfully solved the model in under a minute using a current source as the coil excitation and it mimics very closely the behavior of my laboratory model. However, when I switch the source to voltage, it took several hours and I got the following error:

"Failed to find a solution. Divergence of the linear iterations. Returned solution is not converged."

Has anyone had a similar issue with this? From my understanding, the equations are the same as when I use a current source except Ohm's Law is applied based on coil resistivity for the given number of turns. Applying a voltage source is crucial based on my experimental setup. Is there something I am missing within my definitions or boundary conditions? I am relatively new to COMSOL so any help would be greatly appreciated! Also, my trial expires in 6 days so please help ASAP!

Thanks!
Brandon

Hello Brandon,

When you used voltage source, have you defined a ground plane ?
Try refining your mesh and see what happens.

Good Luck
