Normal Boundary Mode Electric Field Scaling, Boundary Mode Analysis

At this recently updated link, it is recommended to use the ewxx.nebmN as the electric field in the normal direction. However, COMSOL shows its unit as [V]. The field name in the solver also reads "Normal boundary mode electric field, scaled". How is this field exactly calculated? Using transverse fields and taking relevant derivatives? Solved separately? What is it scaled with? Any reference about the details is appreciated.

Thanks for any guidance.
