Metal Processing Module Updates

For users of the Metal Processing Module, COMSOL Multiphysics® version 6.0 brings a new phase transformation model, enhanced capabilities for modeling phase transformations, and an import functionality for phase transformations. Read more about these Metal Processing Module updates below.

New Phase Transformation Model

For steel quenching simulations, the Kirkaldy-Venugopalan phase transformation model has been added to the Phase Transformation node in the Metal Phase Transformation and Austenite Decomposition interfaces. This phase transformation model is mainly suitable for diffusive phase transformations during steel quenching.

Simplified Phase Transformation Modeling

For the Leblond-Devaux, Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK), and Kirkaldy-Venugopalan phase transformation models, TTT diagram data can be used as an alternative means of defining the phase transformation kinetics. To define the Koistinen-Marburger phase transformation model, the Martensite finish temperature can be used as an alternative to the Koistinen-Marburger coefficient.

Importing Phase Transformations for Steel Quenching Simulations

Users of the Metal Processing Module can now import phase transformation data from the software JMatPro®. The imported data can be used directly to describe the decomposition of austenite into the ferrite, pearlite, bainite, and martensite phases. For each phase transformation, the appropriate phase transformation models are configured automatically on import.
