Modeling Cables & Power Electronics
Understanding the thermal and electromagnetic behavior of high-voltage cables is key to their design. Engineers need to identify whether the cable will exceed the maximum allowable temperature, predict safe loading currents, and calculate the electromagnetic fields generated within and around the cables. The COMSOL Multiphysics® software's multiphysics capabilities can be used to simulate these effects while accounting for, e.g., skin depth and temperature-dependent conductivities — ensuring accurate predictions.
Simulation also aids in the design of the power electronics used in solar power systems, wind turbine systems, EVs, and more. Calculations provide crucial insights into device frequency response, efficiency, and thermal management, and virtual testing speeds up the design process.
If you want to develop the skills needed to model cables and power electronics COMSOL Multiphysics®, this intensive 1-day training course is for you. At the end of the training, you will be confident in defining geometries, applying material properties, selecting the appropriate physics interfaces and study steps for your model, and extracting key outputs.
To teach this course, we will use a combination of demonstrations, lectures, and self-guided hands-on training. We will begin with a refresher on the COMSOL Multiphysics® user interface and workflow. Then, we will focus on:
- Electromagnetics of a three-phase high-voltage AC cable
- Determining capacitance, inductance, and impedance
- Heating of power electronic devices and calculation of the operating temperature
- Cooling by radiation and convection
- Calculating total losses and efficiency
Please plan to check in between 08:30–09:00 CEST.
Note: You will need to bring your own laptop and mouse. We will provide a free two-week trial version of COMSOL Multiphysics® to install on your laptop. Please make sure it is installed before the training starts.
Suggested Background
This training course requires a basic knowledge of COMSOL Multiphysics®.
