The mining industry pre-dates sophisticated simulation software and the computers it runs on by thousands of years. As an essential modern industry, however, the technical and analytical capabilities offered by AMPHOS 21, a COMSOL Certified Consultant, are critical for both understanding and optimizing mine operations. Recently, we sponsored a webinar together with NASA Tech Briefs on “Mining and Hydrogeology: Porous Media Flow Simulations with COMSOL”, featuring environmental consultants Jorge Molinero and Elena Abarca from AMPHOS 21.

The block caving mine is considered by the mining industry as one of the natural replacements of the current open cut mines in the near future. Mudrush is a sudden inflow of a sort mud ore into underground mining facilities. It may cause harm to people and equipment, production delays, dilution and mine closure. The purpose of this numerical investigation is to obtain a more complete understanding about the permeability in fragmented materials and its applications to underground mining using COMSOL Multiphysics® software.

The finite element mesh was generated for the whole hydrological basin, highly refined in the mine vicinities, in order to properly adapt the open pit geometry (Figure 2). Hydrogeological modeling with COMSOL Multiphysics is a powerful tool for mine dewatering optimization and prediction of possible environmental impacts. The methodology presented here allows integrating geomorphological, geological, hydrogeological and mine engineering information in an optimal way.

Some of the present metallic ores mines are located in areas formed by a heterogeneous fractured massif where groundwater flows preferentially through fractures. Underground mining in these zones can cause impacts in streams, lakes and change the natural water balance of the watersheds, leading to conflicts between traditional uses of water and the mining activity.

Most of mining works, either on the surface or in the underground, demand continuous groundwater pumping in order to operate under dry conditions. When the mining activity stops, dewatering also stops and mining facilities begin to flood, quite quickly at the beginning but becoming slower as the water level in the pit lake rises.

The hills of South-Limburg, the Netherlands, are crisscrossed with underground limestone mines. These "caves" are not equally stable, and can be dangerous. With COMSOL Multiphysics® a stability assessment has been made. The first study examines the full stress and displacement profile without excavation.

Landmines are an open problem in many countries of the world. They cause injuriesand death and no technique proposed to date guarantees fast and 100% reliable detection alone. To this purpose, at the Humanitarian Demining Laboratory of “La Sapienza” University of Rome, several solutions are being studied. In this paper, numerical simulations of a prototype thermal detection system are reported, and results compared to experimental results.

With this method, an area with known landmines is bombed or plowed using sturdy, mine-resilient tanks to detonate them safely. The relation between how deep the mine was buried and the scattering showed a clear connection to the soil's interference with the wave. For instance, the more shallow the mine was buried, the more easily it was detected.

The detection, characterization, and classification of underground environmental hazardous objects [mines, IEDs, and other unexploded military hardware] is a worldwide problem that needs urgent attention and solution. While electromagnetic sensor technologies have been applied to identify these hazards, increasingly low dielectric contrast between newer, sophisticated landmines, and complex surrounding soil geometric in-homogeneities acts as an increasingly major impediment to successful detection. The present study investigates the use of the Finite Element Method in the COMSOL Multiphysics® software to model the propagation of electromagnetic waves introduced into the computational domain non-invasively.

Acoustic landmine detection is accomplished using a loud speaker as an airborne source to generate low-frequency waves that enter the soil at a certain incident angle. At a specific frequency, the landmine will "vibrate" at resonance, imparting a certain velocity on the soil particles above it that is detected by a scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer system. The ability to mathematically predict the soil surface velocity plots created from these experiments would enable the technology to be implemented faster in more challenging environments.

In underground mining operations, the mined-out spaces (called stopes) need to be backfilled to maintain the stability of surrounding rock mass and increase the ore recovery. Cemented paste backfill (CPB), a mixture of water, binder, and tailings, has been intensively utilized in underground mining operations to fill the stopes. After preparation, the fresh CPB is transported into stopes via gravity and/or pipelines.

The performance of the oil reservoir is decisively determined by the hydraulic permeability of the rock and the possible flow paths. During the production phase, the petrophysical properties of the rock may deteriorate due to highly viscous oil deposits, especially in the near of the borehole. Therefore, it is a challenge to restore the permeability in this area.

This study models the energy harvesting reached from an air flow transportation through the flapping of a cantilever polymer flag. The mechanical resonance of the flag is created by a Venturi channel. The flag is charged by triboelectrification and its flapping between two electrodes induces an electrical current in a load.

Since October 2009 the laboratory of ATE has carried out collaborative research with the WTD 71 that aims for prediction, reduction and optimization of so-called underwater electric potential (UEP) signatures. COMSOL is used to simulate potential distributions in the context of impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems. The electrode kinetics is considered by using boundary conditions based on non-linear polarization curves.
