Senior Applications Engineer

Work with the Ideas that will Shape the Future

COMSOL develops, markets, and sells its own numerical method-based simulation software that is the cornerstone for research and development at many companies, government research labs, and the engineering and science faculties at universities.

Our fundamental philosophy is to provide a simulation environment, the COMSOL Multiphysics® software, that is able to model technical applications that are characterized by multiple, simultaneous physics phenomena, regardless of any unique physics couplings and their complexities. Our users apply this flexible mathematical modeling platform to develop their own models and simulation apps to meet the technical challenges facing us today, and the ideas that will shape the future.

COMSOL, Inc. is looking for a Senior Applications Engineer to join its Los Altos Applications team that will support prospective customers and users in the use of the COMSOL® software, modeling their technical applications and the multiphysics couplings undergirding them.

Primary Responsibilities

Pre-Sales Technical and Applications Support

  • Create and demonstrate well-defined models for prospective customers to illustrate the capabilities of COMSOL® software for modeling their applications.
  • Work together with prospective customers on their evaluation models or assist junior applications engineers in doing this.
  • Present, moderate, and assist in web-based events and meetings with prospective customers that cover general and specialized applications where modeling and the COMSOL Multiphysics® is useful.
  • A willingness and ability to travel for limited periods of time to current and potential customers in order to run COMSOL-sponsored events and activities in North America.

Post-Sales Technical Support

  • Provide technical support to customers using COMSOL Multiphysics® to model the physics and mathematics associated with a wide variety of engineering applications.
  • Identify and communicate to customers and COMSOL staff new and existing functionality where the COMSOL® software can be applied to expand their research and development goals.

Training and Mentoring

  • Increase your expertise and experience in fields and applications where numerical modeling is of current or future interest.
  • Develop and teach course content for the use of the COMSOL® software to current and prospective customers that may range from university-based engineering students and professors, who are experts in their field of research, to engineers and scientists at commercial companies and government research laboratories.
  • Produce technical content that demonstrates the scope, functionality, and flexibility of COMSOL Multiphysics® to certain applications and fields of engineering.
  • Guide and mentor new and junior applications and sales engineers and technical account managers on the application of the COMSOL® software and where it can best be utilized.
  • Provide technical and business-based feedback on current and suggested new software functionality to the Development, Marketing, and Sales departments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in engineering, physics, applied mathematics, or a physical science with twelve months or more experience in modeling based on numerical methods, such as the finite element method or similar.
  • Excellent communication skills on the phone, in person, and in writing.
  • Current eligibility to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A PhD in engineering, physics, applied mathematics, or a physical science.
  • Two to three years’ experience in modeling based on numerical methods, such as the finite element method or similar, that has been gained in a commercial company, government research laboratory, or at a university, which includes research work done towards achieving an advanced degree.
  • Publication of scientific and research papers, articles, and conference presentations.
  • A deep understanding of mathematical modeling and the ability to apply this knowledge to applications in one or more of the following or similar fields: Applied Mathematics/Physics, Heat Transfer, Structural Mechanics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Low and High Frequency Electromagnetics, Optics, Acoustics, MEMS, or Chemical and Electrochemical Processes.

Personal growth

As a Senior Applications engineer, your role will include interacting with customers, prospects, and users of the COMSOL® software such that you will often be at the fulcrum of many diverse research and development projects that shape the world’s future. Your technical and simulation proficiencies will grow to encompass many engineering and scientific disciplines and you will work with many and varied applications every day.
