Hi
I believe it's sufficient and correct to say that it is because you are doing a "modal analysis".
It's the same for a structural beam, fixed at one end end free elsewhere.
When you do an eigenfrequency analysis (or a mode analysis in optics) you get the eigenmodes, that are the "shapes" of the fields for stable modes (but not any correct useful amplitudes info, these are normalised)
--
Good luck
Ivar

Dear Sir,
I am absolutely new to COMSOL. I would like to model the spatial
modes (and eventually the dispersion) of a simple step index optical
fiber (with classic core/cladding/jacket construction). How can I do this
using COMSOL please? My optical fiber consists of silica glass and
I have numerical values for the sizes of the core and cladding. Thanks
ever so much for your help!
Cheers,

Dear Ivar,
Which physics interface do you recommend for the study of effective index, dispersion, and confinement losses versus wavelength in a PCF? Besides, which component of E-field should it be solve for? Three components vector or in-plane vectors?
