Flow front tracking in porous medium without deformation

I would like to model in 2D a layer of a liquid layer sitting on top of a porous medium. This layer should flow inside the porous medium and wet it. In order to model that I need a way of tracking the position of the flow front from outside to inside porous medium. I have tried a little bit the ALE but it seems to work for deforming geometries. At the moment I am not even sure if I need front tracking. Any suggestions on approaching the problem?
Many thanks in advance for the help
