Vibration Control in a Motor Drive Using an Active Magnetic Bearing

Active magnetic bearings are often used for controlling the vibration level in mechanical systems. In this example, a motor driven rotor system in which the speed of the system is gradually increased is considered. The system vibrates due to existing imbalances. As the rotor speed crosses through the critical speeds of the system, high vibration levels are induced due to resonance. In the second study, an electromagnetic bearing is switched on at the instant when rotor is crossing over one of critical speeds with the objective of controlling the vibrations during the resonance. The vibration response of the system with electromagnetic bearing is compared with the one without electromagnetic bearing.
