Course:

Performing Optimization in COMSOL Multiphysics

Introduction to Optimization

In Part 1 of this course on optimization, we begin by providing a brief overview of the COMSOL Multiphysics® software and then dive into a detailed introduction to optimization, where we discuss what optimization is, explain various optimization terms you will hear in this course, and note the different types of optimization. Then, we provide an introduction to optimization in COMSOL Multiphysics®. This includes the optimization modeling tools and functionality, the various options for optimization solvers, and tutorial models from different application areas.

Following this, we have an in-depth discussion on exploring a design space through parametric sweeps. This is proceeded by a guided demonstration in the software where we set up, build, and compute a model of a microresistor beam, thus preparing the forward model. We then perform postprocessing to evaluate the resistance of the device with its original design. We explain during the demonstration why and how this is done in preparation for a parametric optimization study of the model, which you will see in Part 2.
