COMSOL 3.5a Hotfix 1

This fix addresses the following:

COMSOL Multiphysics

The MATLAB interface has been upgraded to support MATLAB 2008b or 2009a. This update no longer officially supports earlier MATLAB versions. If you use MATLAB 2009b or 2010a, the additional Patch for MATLAB 2010a support and Snow Leopard support is also needed.

A new SOR line smoother has been added which improves the performance of the geometric multigrid solver for fluid-flow simulations that use boundary-layer meshing.

Functions of the dependent variables defined in the Functions dialog box can now be used as a source in a model.

The comsol batch command now works correctly when using the current solution as the initial guess for the solver.

The streamline diffusion stabilization now works correctly for axisymmetric models using the Convection and Conduction application mode.

Various stability improvements and fixes.

Special note

Only the BLAS libraries provided along with the COMSOL installation are supported by COMSOL 3.5a Hotfix 1 on Linux and Sun.

MATLAB 2008a and earlier may very well work with 3.5a Hotfix 1 even if they have not been tested by COMSOL.

RF Module

When using the scattered field formulation, the performance of perfectly matched layers (PMLs) has been improved.

AC/DC Module

The phase factor is now included when postprocessing the background field in a model using a reduced potential formulation.

Heat Transfer Module

The pressure work term in the General Heat Transfer application mode is now correctly added to the equations in the model.

CAD Import Module

Fixes problem in earlier 3.5a hotfixes with opening MPH-files of version 3.5 or earlier that contained CAD geometries created with a bidirectional CAD interface.

It is now possible to import CAD geometries with imprinted free edges or free vertices.


Before you begin, make sure that you run COMSOL version or These are the only versions that can be updated with this fix. On the Help menu, click "About COMSOL Multiphysics" to check your version.


  • Download the file comsol_3.5.0.608_nn.jar, where nn is one of win64 (64-bit system) or win32 (32-bit system). Place it in the updates folder in your COMSOL installation folder, for example C:\COMSOL35a\updates. If the updates folder is not available, please create it.
  • Note: Only download one file. The 64-bit file contains all necessary 32-bit and 64-bit components.
  • Select Programs > COMSOL 3.5a > Tools > Install COMSOL Update from the Windows Start menu.

Linux and Sun

  • Download the file comsol_3.5.0.608_nn.jar, where nn is one of
    • linux64 (64-bit Linux),
    • linux32 (32-bit Linux),
    • itanium (Itanium 2 based Linux) or
    • solaris (Sun SPARC).
    Place it in the updates folder in your COMSOL installation folder, for example
    /usr/local/COMSOL35a/updates. If the updates folder is not available, please create it.
  • At the command line, run the following command: comsol update

Mac OS X

  • Download the file comsol_3.5.0.608_nn.dmg, where nn is either of
    • macintel64 (64-bit Intel processor),
    • macintel32 (32-bit Intel processor) or
    • macppc (PowerPC processor).
  • If it does not mount automatically, double-click the dmg file to mount it.
  • Double-click COMSOL Installer to launch the installer. If your COMSOL installation is not in the default location in the Applications folder, the installer will ask you to locate the COMSOL installation folder.
  • When the installation is selected, click Install to start the installation.

Check the Installation

Do the following to check that the installation is complete:

  1. Start COMSOL Multiphysics.
  2. In the Help menu, select About COMSOL Multiphysics.
  3. Check that the version number is (If not, the installation did not succeed).

The only difference between the earlier and the current hotfix is that the current hotfix can handle old MPH-files with imported CAD geometries (see above under CAD Import Module).
