In accordance with our Quality Policy, COMSOL maintains a library of hundreds of documented model examples that are regularly tested against the latest version of the COMSOL Multiphysics® software, including benchmark problems from ASME and NAFEMS, as well as TEAM problems.
Our Verification and Validation (V&V) test suite provides consistently accurate solutions that are compared against analytical results and established benchmark data. The documented models below are part of the COMSOL Multiphysics® software’s built-in Application Libraries. They include reference values and sources for a wide range of benchmarks, as well as step-by-step instructions to reproduce the expected results on your own computer. You can use these models not only to document your software quality assurance (SQA) and numerical code verification (NCV) efforts, but also as part of an in-house training program.
This example shows a 2D plane stress model of a thin tapered cantilever. Different boundary and load scenarios are examined. It is demonstrated how to apply and how to evaluate different load and constraint groups. Resulting stresses are compared to NAFEMS benchmark values and they are ... Read More
Zinc-Silver oxide (Zn-AgO) batteries are used in different industries due to their high capacity per unit weight. In this work, discharge of a Zn-AgO battery is simulated using the Battery with Binary Electrolyte interface. The electrochemical reactions in the positive and negative ... Read More
In this example, a heat-conduction problem with phase change in a porous material is solved, and the results are compared with the analytical solution, also known as the Lunardini solution. This is the first benchmark case from the InterFrost project, which was initiated to compare ... Read More
This model reproduces the NiCd battery model and the results presented in De Vidts' and White's paper from 1995. Ref: P. De Vidts, R. E. White, “Mathematical Modeling of a Nickel-Cadmium Cell: Proton Diffusion in the Nickel Electrode”, J. Electrochem. Soc, Vol. 142, No. 5, May 1995. Read More
This tutorial simulates a standard test and benchmark model for nonreflecting conditions and sponge layers for linearized Euler-like systems. It involves the propagation of a transient Gaussian pulse in a 2D uniform flow. The Convected Wave Equation, Time Explicit interface solves the ... Read More
Powder compaction is a key process in powder metallurgy, where it gives the flexibility to produce quality products of complex shapes for sintering. The density of the compact is a key factor to determine the overall quality of the sintered product, as regions with lower density could ... Read More
This model simulates the isotropic compression of naturally structured and artificially structured clays using the Modified Structured Cam-Clay (MSCC) material model. The aim of the example is to reproduce the compression behavior given in a benchmark for four structured clays. Read More
The capability to alter the polarization of light is crucial to a wide variety of optical devices. For example, the polarization of light has a significant effect on the performance of optical isolators, attenuators, and beam splitters. By assigning a specific polarization to light, most ... In this example, a settlement and heave analysis of a shallow foundation resting on an unsaturated soil stratum is conducted with the Modified Cam-Clay and Extended Barcelona Basic soil models. The effect of pore suction due to movements in the phreatic line and the resulting settlement ... Read More
This example explores the shift in natural frequencies caused by changing the temperature. One study investigates a doubly clamped beam where both ends are fixed, while the other study looks at a cantilever beam where only one end is fixed. The following effects are studied: Stress ... Read More
