COMSOL Day: Fluid & Heat

Join us for a full-day online event focusing on the crucial physics of fluids and heat. You will have the opportunity to meet COMSOL technical staff and COMSOL users across many industries.  

This event will feature presentations and demonstrations of COMSOL Multiphysics® simulations involving fluid flow and heat transfer. Experienced guest speakers will provide the users’ perspective. As this is a broad topic, the schedule is arranged with several parallel sessions, giving you the opportunity to choose from a range of talks, including specific applications like pipe flow and metal processing and more general issues like solving large CFD problems and nonisothermal flow.

Solving Large CFD Problems

In this session, we will discuss strategies for solving large CFD problems. A carefully designed mesh will not only lead to better accuracy but may also substantially reduce the solution time. Initializing the flow field with a simplified model often gives a great deal of information about mesh resolution and mesh-element alignment, and also the appropriate type of wall-layer modeling. For time-dependent problems, we will also give some hints on choosing an appropriate time step in the solver sequence.

Turbulent Flow Modeling

Most flows in real-world applications involve turbulence, e.g., flow past hydrofoils, flow in heat exchangers, HVAC systems, industrial-scale mixers, and pipe networks. In this session, we will discuss the turbulent flow modeling capabilities in COMSOL Multiphysics®, including RANS models, treating flow near walls, LES models, and common multiphysics couplings.

Radiative Heat Transfer

Radiative heat transfer is one of the three types of heat transfer and plays a major role in many applications. During this session, we will discuss different examples in order to help identify cases where thermal radiation has to be accounted for. Then, we will present the different physics interfaces for radiation modeling. Surface-to-surface radiation modeling capabilities will be described in detail. In particular, the options to define gray radiation and multiple spectral bands will be explored. Modeling radiation with different types of surfaces (diffuse, specular, and semitransparent) will also be presented.

Parallel Session
Multiphase Flow Modeling

Flows, including multiple thermodynamic phases, are relevant in several industrial applications ranging from microfluidics, such as droplet transport and inkjet printing, to large-scale applications, such as fluidized beds or the simultaneous flow of oil, gas, and water through pipelines. In this session, we will explore the different classifications of multiphase flow and discuss which tools and features within COMSOL Multiphysics® can be used to solve different scenarios.

Porous Media

COMSOL Multiphysics® includes a wide range of features for the modeling and simulation of porous materials. This includes capabilities for modeling phenomena such as heat transfer, fluid flow, and poroelasticity as well as the general structural mechanics in porous materials. In addition, the software includes unique functionality for coupling the abovementioned phenomena in one model.

In this session, we will give you an overview of the capabilities of COMSOL Multiphysics® for modeling fluid flow, heat transfer, chemical species transport, and structural mechanics in porous media. We will also demonstrate how to set up models and apps in the software.

David Kan
Vice President of Sales

David Kan is COMSOL's vice president of sales for the southwestern region of the US. He set up the Los Angeles branch office of COMSOL in 2001 and received a PhD in applied mathematics from UCLA in 1999.

Lauren Sansone
Senior Sales Manager, Events

Lauren Sansone is a senior sales manager at COMSOL, Inc. and has been with COMSOL since 2006. She is responsible for the global event marketing of COMSOL Days, the COMSOL Conference, exhibitions, and training.

Jacob Yström
Technology Director, Numerical Analysis

Jacob Yström is the technology director of numerical analysis at COMSOL. He has been the lead developer for the solver technology at COMSOL since 2005. He received his PhD in numerical analysis from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.

Andy Cai
Senior Applications Engineer

Andy Cai currently works as an applications manager leading the structural and acoustics team in the U.S. office. He joined COMSOL in 2015. Previously, he received his PhD in geophysics from Yale University in 2014 and spent a year at the University of Maryland, College Park for postdoctoral work.

Mranal Jain
Senior Applications Engineer

Mranal Jain has been with COMSOL since 2013 and currently leads the transport team in the Burlington, MA office. He studied microfluidics and electrokinetic transport while pursuing his PhD in chemical engineering at the University of Alberta, Edmonton.

Andrzej Bielecki
Applications Engineer

Andrzej Bielecki is an applications engineer at COMSOL with a focus on CFD. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Prior to joining COMSOL, he worked as an application engineer designing needle and track roller bearings for the aerospace industry.

Akhilesh Sasankan
Applications Engineer

Akhilesh Sasankan is a technical sales engineer at COMSOL. Before starting at COMSOL, he received master's in mechanical engineering from Arizona State University. Akhilesh's areas of interests include CFD and high-performance computing.

Nicolas Huc
Technology Director, Heat Transfer

Nicolas Huc joined COMSOL France in 2004 and is currently the head of their development team. He is also the manager of the Heat Transfer Module. Nicolas studied engineering at ENSIMAG before receiving his PhD in living system modeling from Joseph Fourier University.
