Parameter selection for plots

After performing a parametric sweep study a selection menu is available in the plot settings.

I have noticed that the selection menu for parameters can appear in two different ways.
- Normally I get a menu that allows to select one or more combinations of parameters by selecting each parameter seperately.
- But sometimes I get a menu that allows to select one or more combinations of parameters by requiring to select each combination directly. (this can be annoying if you have a large space, like I do now, 4x4x250)

I wonder what causes this dual behaviour. I can't find a way to switch between these two different parameter selection menus and it is difficult to find information on it (if it exists at all).
