Join this online, 3-day training course to get the best possible introduction to plasma modeling and simulation using COMSOL Multiphysics®. The main focus of the course is on nonequilibrium plasmas, as they are used, for example, in the semiconductor industry. The course also provides a general overview of plasma modeling using the Plasma Module.

Plasma modeling includes the description of phenomena such as the kinetics of charged and neutral species, mass transport, electromagnetic fields, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics. This course gives you an introduction to the underlying model equations for these phenomena and possible approximations to simplify the solutions to the equations using COMSOL Multiphysics®. We also discuss the possibilities and limitations of plasma modeling and simulation using the software.

During the course, we complement guided hands-on demonstrations with discussions of relevant theory and best practices. By the end of the session, you will know how to successfully and efficiently set up plasma models and run simulations using the COMSOL® software.

Day 1

  • Drift diffusion model
  • DC discharges

Day 2

10 a.m.–12 p.m. EDT

  • Capacitively coupled plasmas
  • Inductively coupled plasmas
  • Microwave plasmas
  • Electrical characterization of plasma systems

Day 3

10 a.m.–12 p.m. EDT

  • Electron energy distribution function and Boltzmann equation, two-term approximation
  • Coupling with fluid flow and heat transfer
  • Ion-energy distribution function and particle tracing

Suggested Background

We strongly recommend that those who are new to COMSOL Multiphysics® have attended a course such as the COMSOL Multiphysics® Essential Training prior to this class. Some familiarity with the basic concepts of plasma physics may be advantageous.

Applications Engineer

Annette Pahl is an applications engineer at Comsol Multiphysics GmbH since 2012. She has studied food technology and chemistry and completed her doctorate on the characterization and numerical simulation of plasma sources at the University of Göttingen. She has worked in plasma diagnostics and modification for the HAWK in Göttingen.
