question about dialysis model

I have two question regarding the dialysis example model:
www.comsol.com/showroom/documentation/model/258/

1. where does this "stiff-spring" approx. come from? (and how does it apply in this case?)
2. is the constant of 0.7 (which the model documentation says is the ratio of concentrations and the partition coefficient) the saturation concentration ratio?
