Structural Mechanics Modeling in COMSOL Multiphysics®

If you want to learn how to perform structural analyses in COMSOL Multiphysics®, this is the course for you. During the 4-day course, we will introduce you to the structural mechanics modeling functionality in COMSOL Multiphysics®, the Structural Mechanics Module, and the Nonlinear Structural Materials Module. We will also go over structural optimization problems.

Day 1: Introduction to the Structural Mechanics Module

12 p.m. - 2 p.m. EST

This session will begin with a basic theoretical session followed by an overview of the Structural Mechanics Module. This session will also cover basic modeling techniques such as meshing, solvers, and postprocessing in COMSOL Multiphysics® in order to make attendees familiar with the overall interface. The following topics will be covered:

  • Types of elements in COMSOL Multiphysics®, such as solid, shell, plate, membrane, beam, and truss
  • Boundary conditions

3 p.m. - 6 p.m. EST

  • Simplified modeling techniques, such as adding lumped parameters (added mass, spring foundation, etc.)
  • Mixing element types (beam connection, shell connection, etc.)
  • Use of symmetry; plane stress/plane strain problems
  • Stationary and time-dependent problems

Day 2: Introduction to Nonlinearity in Structures

12 p.m. - 2 p.m. EST

The second day builds upon the training from the first day. We will look at stationary and dynamic problems, and the role of damping will be discussed. The session will cover the following topics:

  • Modal and prestressed analysis
  • Vibration analysis of a structure subjected to harmonic excitation for one or several frequencies
  • Linear buckling analysis

3 p.m. - 6 p.m. EST

  • Sources of nonlinearity
  • Problems involving geometric nonlinearity
  • Working with material and spatial frames of reference
  • Load ramping techniques
  • Modeling bolted connections

Day 3: Multiphysics Analysis

12 p.m. - 2 p.m. EST

The third day focuses on contact modeling as well as multiphysics applications of structural mechanics. The following topics will be covered:

  • Contact analysis
  • Augmented Lagrangian and penalty methods
  • Advanced settings (such as different solver options, initial contact conditions, scaling of variables, fall-back conditions, etc.)

3 p.m. - 6 p.m. EST

  • Multiphysics analysis: thermal stress
  • Fluid-structure interaction, acoustic-structure interaction
  • Thermal contact
  • Electromagnetic-structural analysis
  • Modeling piezoelectric materials

Day 4: Structural Optimization

12 p.m. - 2 p.m. EST

The last day focuses on some of the advanced topics to model nonlinearity in materials. The session will also cover shape and topology optimization of structures. The following topics will be covered:

  • Modeling plasticity in metals
  • Viscoelastic materials
  • Adaptive mesh refinement
  • Visualization and presentation of results

3 p.m. - 6 p.m. EST

  • Basics of optimization
  • Design optimization
  • Shape optimization
  • Topology optimization

Some or all of the above topics will be considered according to the length of the course and the interests of the participants.

Suggested Background

This course assumes a mechanical engineering background and familiarity with the concepts of structural mechanics. We strongly recommend that those new to COMSOL Multiphysics® take the COMSOL Multiphysics® Introduction course prior to attending this class.

Andy Cai joined COMSOL in 2015. Previously, he received his PhD in geophysics from Yale in 2014 and spent a year at the University of Maryland, College Park for postdoctoral work.
