There are several kinds of technology that designers at Sharp Laboratories of Europe work to create. From LED lighting, displays, and microfluidic lab-on-a-chip technology, to complex energy systems used in various devices, Sharp needed a new approach to finding the best designs. COMSOL Multiphysics and its add-on products provided the versatility to augment Sharp's research and development in many different areas.
To improve the heat dissipation and electrode design of LED lighting, Sharp used COMSOL to simulate heat dissipation. For their work on displays, Sharp turned to COMSOL to perform the local stress, fatigue and thermal analyses. When it came to lab-on-a-chip designs, Sharp investigated the interactions between particles in a fluid layer and the surrounding electronics to estimate impedances that indicate the presence or absence of particles. For energy systems, they used COMSOL Multiphysics to accurately simulate gas and liquid flows in the system in addition to thermal transfer in the solid components.
