If you want to learn how to use COMSOL Multiphysics software to model acoustics and vibration phenomena, this is the course for you. The Acoustics and Vibrations Analysis course will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the Acoustics Module, an add-on to COMSOL Multiphysics.

As part of the training, we will demonstrate simulations of both pressure waves in fluids and elastic waves in solids with couplings between pressure acoustics, structural mechanics, and piezoelectricity in addition to the frequency characteristics of an acoustic system. We will also cover modal, frequency-response, and transient simulations, as well as more advanced topics, such as nondestructive testing, aeroacoustics, thermoacoustics, nonlinear acoustics, and electroacoustics. Along with the Acoustics Module, you will get to use the Structural Mechanics Module during this training course.

Day 1

2 p.m.–5 p.m. EDT

  • Pressure Acoustics Analysis – Modeling with Finite Element Method
    • Physics set up
    • Modeling open boundaries using Perfectly Matched Layer
    • Meshing wave problems

Day 2

11 a.m.–1 p.m. EDT

  • Pressure Acoustics Analysis – Modeling with Finite Element Method
    • Solver setting options for large acoustic models
    • Transient analysis
  • Pressure Acoustics Analysis – Modeling with Boundary Element Method

2 p.m.–5 p.m. EDT

  • Pressure Acoustics Analysis – Modeling with Discontinuous Galerkin Method
  • Elastic Waves and Vibrations Analysis
  • Acoustic-Structure Interaction

Day 3

  • Work on exercises (no class)

Day 4

11 a.m.–1 p.m. EDT

  • Thermoviscous Acoustics
  • Aeroacoustics and Ultrasound
  • Geometrical Acoustics

2 p.m.–5 p.m. EDT

  • Piezoelectric Effect
  • Electroacoustics
  • Multiscale Modeling for Complicated Acoustic Systems

Suggested Background

This course assumes some familiarity with the basic concepts of acoustics and structural dynamics. We strongly recommend that those new to COMSOL Multiphysics® take the COMSOL Multiphysics® Introductory course prior to attending this class.

Jinlan Huang
Lead Applications Engineer

Jinlan Huang is an applications engineer for vibrations and acoustics and instructs acoustics training courses. She received her PhD from Boston University, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, investigating acoustic wave propagation in complex-tissue environments and ultrasound-induced tissue heating and bleeding control. She joined COMSOL in 2011.
